George selected land at Katamite where he and his sister Maria are shown as early settlers. They were there in 1876. Maria would have been assisting George who was a widower, with three young children, as well as fulfilling the condition of
residency on her lease.
Each member of the family could take out a lease of 230 acres, so Maria selected Lot 8 of 319 acres 3 roods 28 perches and George selected Lot 9 of 174 3 roods 35 perches and later part of Lot 10, 91 acres 2 roods and 13 perches. His property
was on the opposite side of Powerline Road from his brother Lawrence.

In 1883, George acted as judge at the first meeting of the Katamite Race Club on the property on Mr Maddler. He also lent his piano to help celebrate the opening of the Mechanic's Institute on 31st July 1891.

In 1890 George ‎(aged 42)‎ re-married to Rebecca Higgins aged 21 years, of Burramine at St Mary's
Rebecca was born at Benalla in 1869 ‎(No 6691)‎ one of thirteen children ‎(9 girls and 4 boys)‎ of Samuel Higgins, farmer of Boosey and Jane Smith. Four more boys were born to George's second marriage.
