Ellena was a widow when she arrived in Melbourne, Australia on the ship Melbourne on November 3rd, 1857. The Argus newspaper, which ran a section titled Shipping Arrivals, described the ship 'Melbourne' as a barque, of 594 tons. The Master named P. Caroline. She had sailed from Liverpool on the 28th July 1857, with 277 Government Immigrants. The ships Surgeon Superintendant was named Thomas Wilmott, Esq., he reported that the ship was small and not adapted to the service, but that the conduct of the immigrants, who were all nominees, was generally good. The Shipping Agents - Holmer White & Co. Ellena was described as a farm servant from Tipperary, who could neither read or write. She was accompanied by her son James. According to the immigration record, she left the ship with friends. 'The friends' may well have been her other children who had arrived on the ship 'Saldanha' in June 1857.

Ellena lived with her son James and his wife Bridget ever since their marriage at Kilmore in 1858. When James and his family moved to "Berrigan Park", Ellen lived in a separate cottage built for her between the main house and the kitchen. Her grandchildren passed on stories of how 'Nan' would mind them, and prepare meals for the family whilst James and Bridget cleared the bush..
